TRENTON, NJ. – It was dominance on both sides of the ball as the Trenton Central Tornadoes (20-1) defeated the Trenton Catholic Preparatory Academy Iron Mikes (5-11) on Thursday, 78-51.
“We haven’t had a twenty-win season since 2019… That was one of the short-term goals, to get twenty wins this year,” said Trenton Central head coach Darryl Young after the game.
From the opening tip, it was all Trenton Central. They held a 14-3 lead not even halfway through the first quarter and were looking to put the game out of reach early. At the end of one, the Tornadoes held a 24-9 lead, following two rim-rocking dunks by senior guard/forward Davontay Hutson, who finished with 19 points and 12 boards.
The second quarter was more of the same, and at halftime, Trenton Central was enjoying a comfortable 47-25 lead.
Out of the break, there was no let up. Trenton Central continued to exploit holes in TCPA’s defense and consistently got wide open looks from deep as well as in the paint.
When all was said and done, the Tornadoes had a 78-51 victory, and a 20-win season.
Trenton Central was led by senior guard Antwan Bridgett, who put together a ridiculous stat line of 27 points, 4 rebounds, 9 assists, and 3 steals.
“He does it all for us… He’s our guy,” said Coach Young, speaking about Bridgett postgame.
Senior power forward Chris Wilson also impressed with his 20 point 10 rebound double-double.
As for the Iron Mikes, junior guard Rasaan Washington lead the way with 17 points and 5 assists.
Something that stood out while watching Trenton Central play was their ball movement. They continuously found the open man by picking apart TCPA’s defense in route to 19 assists.
On the defensive end, the Tornadoes were just as good, forcing TCPA into 21 turnovers, including 12 steals.
Trenton Central will look to continue their outstanding season on Friday, as they head to Princeton High School to take on the 7-10 Tigers. As for TCPA, their next game is a home matchup on Monday against the 15-4 Westampton Tech Panthers.
