Central Bucks hit with jury verdict in pay-discrimination case

A federal jury has ruled against the Central Bucks School District in a pay discrimination case brought by two female teachers. English teacher Dawn Marinello and former CBSD educator Rebecca Cartee-Haring were awarded $84,000 and $81,000 respectively after alleging sex-based disparities in their salaries. Cartee-Haring is the wife of current school board member Rick Haring. While the plaintiffs had initially sought broader class-action status to include other teachers, that effort was denied last year. The jury’s decision came after a U.S. District Court trial, though the damages awarded were substantially less than the plaintiffs requested. In a pointed response, the school board — excluding Haring — labeled the suit “meritless” and announced the district will appeal the verdict.

Scam alert: Fake warrants used to dupe Bucks residents

The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office is warning the public about a phone scam that falsely claims residents face arrest unless they pay up. In a recent incident, a local resident reported being contacted by someone impersonating law enforcement, who claimed there was a warrant out for their arrest. Authorities stress that real police will never demand payments via text, call, or email, and urge residents to report suspicious contacts immediately. The scam appears designed to steal both money and personal information, with officials emphasizing the need for vigilance.

County leaders recognize Opportunity Council’s work

The Bucks County Opportunity Council (BCOC) has been formally recognized by the County Commissioners in honor of May’s designation as Community Action Month. The nonprofit assists low-income residents with housing and emergency services. BCOC Director of Development Joe Cuozzo highlighted the group’s recent success in helping 18 families rise out of poverty. “It’s important to get people housed on a regular basis and provide residents with quality assistance,” Cuozzo said. The organization continues to play a central role in Bucks County’s safety net for families in crisis.
