Straw Purchaser Gets Prison Time for Firearms Linked to Homicide
A Delaware County woman has been sentenced to eight to twenty years in state prison for making illegal gun purchases in Bucks and Montgomery counties. Demia Burell-Brinkley, 31, pleaded guilty in March to buying four firearms between July 2020 and May 2022 and reselling them for $200 apiece. One of the weapons—a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun purchased in Lafayette Hill—was tied to a Philadelphia homicide in 2020. Burell-Brinkley also bought two Glock pistols from Auger Precision Firearms in Croydon. The case was investigated by the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office, which has ramped up efforts to curb straw purchasing in the region.
Short-Term Grant Keeps Head Start Programs Running in Bucks
The Bucks County Intermediate Unit announced Saturday that it received a one-month federal continuation grant for its Head Start and Early Head Start programs, ensuring operations through June 30, 2025. The short-term funding comes as the agency awaits approval of a five-year renewal application submitted in January to the Administration for Children and Families. While the extension allows the programs to remain open for the remainder of the school year, long-term stability remains uncertain. Head Start services play a key role in early education for low-income families across Bucks County.
